"The purpose of this course is to learn the basics or to expand one's knowledge of selected mathematical topics by working exclusively on conjectures of the computer program Graffiti."

• Starting-the-course to-do list:
  • Contact Professor Fajtlowicz so that he has contact information for you.
  • Start reading the KBA manual (below).
  • Please post questions regarding installation and use of Graffiti on the course discussion board on WebCT. This discussion board is monitored regularly by Craig Larson.
  • Professor Fajtlowicz also runs a list-serve (an email discussion list) for discussion and results of conjectures of Graffiti. Conference notices, and other information that may be of interest to its members are also posted to the KBA-list. Members of the list include current and former students and other interested researchers. You should subscribe to it. Here are Directions.

• Representation of Graphs (pdf). This includes a discussion of adjacency matrices and coding sequences.
• The definitions of the invariants that appear in Graffiti's conjectures.
• Two Contributions of Euler (pdf).

One of the very best introductory graph theory books is Bondy and Murty's Graph Theory with Applications. This book is now out-of-print but you can find it on the web here.

• A draft version of the KBA Users Manual (4 MB pdf file) This manual explains how to install and run Graffiti; the course is centered around your use of this program. The manual is a work-in-progress and will be changed and revised in response to user needs, comments, and suggestions. Here's a link to a prototype web manual.
  Known Problems (that will be fixed in future revisions):

• A good introduction to student use of Graffiti is Ryan Pepper's paper "On New Didactics of Mathematics: Learning Graph Theory via Graffiti" (to appear in the DIMACS volume "Graphs and Discovery")

• A good freeware Windows SSH client (5 MB). This client is free for educational users.

• A draft version of the Hex/Benzenoid Manual is included in the Graffiti manual.
