Undergraduate Research
I am always looking for undergraduates who are interested in participating
in extracurricular research projects. If you would like to become
involved in such a project, please check here for a brief description
of
possible topics.
Majoring in Math
Are you thinking of majoring in math? If so take a look at some of the careers available in the mathematical
sciences. Also check out this list of famous people who
majored in math but went on to do other things.

AMS and MAA resources
The American Mathematical Society (AMS) and Mathematical Association
of America (MAA) both have a list of sites on the web for undergraduate
mathematics majors.
Programs for Studying Mathematics
Semester Programs
- The Mathematics Advanced
Study
Semesters at Penn State
The MASS program
provides a comprehensive, semester-long mathematical
environment for a group of talented
undergraduate students recruited from throughout the
United States. The
program is located at Penn State's University Park campus in
State College, PA and offers a mutually reinforcing blend of learning and
research. MASS is an excellent way to prepare for the research
requirements and
rigors of graduate school.
- The Budapest
Semesters in Mathematics Program
A Program in English for American
and Canadian undergraduates that allows you to spend a
semester or year in Budapest. Courses are taugtht in
English and taught by leading Hungarian scholars.
- Math in Moscow
A semester long program in English that allows you to study mathematics in
Moscow at the Independent University of Moscow (IUM), a small, elite
institution of higher learning focusing primarily on mathematics. There
are special
scholarships available from the AMS for this program.
Summer Programs
- Research
Experiences for Undergraduates
Each summer the National Science
Foundation makes possible a number of opportunities for
undergraduates to join research projects. Each site consists of a
group of ten or so undergraduates who work in the research
programs of the host institution. Students are in general accepted from
throughout the country. Each student is assigned to a specific research
project, where he/she works closely with the faculty, post-docs, and
graduate
students. In addition, events such as seminars, lunch meetings, and social
functions are
organized to facilitate interaction between the undergraduates. Students
are granted stipends, and in some cases assistance with housing and
travel. These are very well respected programs and give undergraduates
the opportunity to conduct original research. Here is a FAQ for
Math REU's as well as a compilation
of REU's and other opportunities in mathematics maintained at the
University of Nebraska at Lincoln.
- Director's
Summer Program at the National Security Agency
The DSP is the
NSA's premier outreach effort to the very
best undergraduate
mathematics majors in the country. Each summer, we invite
25 exceptional math
students to participate in a 12-week program where they
collaborate with each
other and with NSA mathematicians on mission-critical
problems. The students participating in the program work a broad
range of problems
involving applications of Abstract Algebra, Geometry,
Number Theory,
Combinatorics, Graph Theory, Probability, Statistics, and
Analysis. For the
first two weeks of the summer, lectures on modern
cryptologic mathematics are
given. After the lectures, the students are presented with
about ten current
problems and choose one or two as the focus of their
research. All research is
documented in a series of papers written by the students
near the end of the
summer. Throughout the summer, students develop
mathematical theory, apply what
they learn to obtain real-time solutions, and experience
the success built on
hard work and innovation.
- Park City Math
Institute
PCMI is a 3-week mathematics program held at Park City, Utah. The program
includes groups consisting of mathematics educators, undergraduate
students, graduate students, and mathematics researchers. These groups
participate simultaneously, pursuing both individual courses of study and
a meaningful amount of interaction. The rich mathematical experience
combined with interaction among all participants results in greatly
increased understanding and awareness of the issues confronting
mathematics and mathematics education today. There is also an additional
10-week
mentoring program for
women.
- The AMS
internship and co-op opportunities for undergraduates list
A list
of various companies that have summer internships available for math
majors.
- Enhancing Diversity in Graduate
Education
The EDGE program is a summer program aimed at
strengthening the ability of women and minority students to successfully
complete graduate programs in math. Students about to enter a grad
program, or those in their first year, are eligible to apply.
- The
Carleton/St. Olaf Colleges Summer Mathematics Program for
Women
This program
is an NSF/NSA funded program to encourage and support women
in their study of mathematics.
- The George Washington
University Summer Program for Women
in Mathematics
This program is a 5-week intensive program for
mathematically-talented undergraduate women who are completing their
junior year and may be contemplating graduate study in the mathematical
sciences.
Undergraduate Mathematics Journals
These journals contain articles written by undergraduates. If you have
been involved in undergraduate research, they are appropriate places for
you to submit an article for publication.
