. . . . . .
In the summer of 1927, Houston Junior College, the predecessor of the University of Houston, opened its doors to 232 students. They attended night classes at San Jacinto High School (now the Houston Community College central campus) on Holman Street. That first year, students were taught by eight faculty members from the University of Texas, Rice University, and Sam Houston State Teachers College. The temporary buildings on the high school's front lawn, pictured here, served as the first administrative offices of the college and later the university.
