We will study subspaces of maximal operator spaces. The aim of the talk will be to provide many examples of the phenomenon that maximality does not descend to subspaces. To this end we will borrow techniques from Banach space theory. As a by-product, we will be able to answer the question of Vern Paulsen concerning amalgamated direct sums of minimal operator spaces.
