MATHEMATICS 1300: FUNDAMENTALS OF MATHEMATICS

This section of Math 1300 is a self-paced computer based (pc or mac) course in Intermediate Algebra available through the internet at the student's home, school, library or other place and time of convenience. Students register in the usual way for Math 1300, Section 11498 and may pick up (at no cost!) CD ROMs and Workbook simply by bringing a paid fee bill showing proper registration in the course.

Students must have individual access to a personal computer and should contact: Dr. H. Decell (713-743-3464, room 693 PGH, email: hdecell@math.uh.edu) or Dr. M. O'Malley (713-743-3487, room 616 PGH).

Students begin the course by inserting the CD ROM and following the on-screen prompts. A workbook is also provided with the CD ROM. Each lesson contains examples, visual aids, explanations, and practice quizzes (not evaluated for a grade).

The software provides periodic automatic checks that indicate student progress and weaknesses. Students having difficulties will be redirected by the software to material that will help to overcome the difficulties.

In addition, the mathematics department tutoring mathlab will available all day and on Saturdays should you require any off-line help with the material.

At the end of the semester a single written exam having questions similar to those of the practice quizzes will determine the student's final grade. Students may obtain practice end-of-the-semester examinations from the mathematics department.

If the student does not take the end-of-semester exam during the semester he/she is registered for the course, a grade of "· " (dot) will be assigned. The student should not re-register for Math 1300. Instead, the student should prepare for the next offering of an end-of-the-semester exam administered for this course.

An orientation, for those who wish to attend, will be given during the first week of classes. The time and location of the orientation will be posted in room PGH 651, Mathematics Department.
