The format of Math 4389 is a sequence of two to three week modules reviewing subjects you have studied in your undergraduate mathematics curriculum - linear algebra, abstract algebra, differential equations, analysis, and probability. It is possible that you have not studied one of these subjects but the modules are essentially self-contained, so you will be able to get something from them even if it is not a complete education.
The only exam in the course will be the Major Field Test in Mathematics. Everybody is required to take this test, but nobody will fail the course because of it, unless they fail to take it. The rule is that you cannot get an A in the course unless you score above the national median. In the past, almost all of our students have done so. Scoring high on the Major Field Test is not sufficient by itself to get an A. There will also be homework assignments on which you will be graded.
This semester, the Department of Mathematics will pay the $50 fee for you to take the test. When this course becomes a degree requirement, students will have to pay the fee.
Professors Peters and Etgen will be the instructors for this course and each will teach at least two of the modules. Other faculty members in the Math Department may also contribute.
The first two modules are:
