Background

I am originally from St. Petersburg, Russia. I graduated from the math school #30 in 1988. I spent three years as an undergraduate in the Department of Applied Mathematics in what used to be the Shipbuilding Institute. I moved to the US in March 1992. In the Fall of 1992, I entered RPI as a transfer student and earned my B.S. in Mathematics in May 1994.

I went to graduate school also at RPI in 1994. I graduated from the Department of Mathematics at RPI in 1998. My thesis advisors were Professor Gregor Kovacic and Professor Victor Roytburd.

In September 1998 I came to Courant Institute and started working with Professor Andrew Majda. I spent four years at Courant and in the Fall of 2002 accepted a tenure-track position at the University of Houston.

Personal Interests & Links

One of my hobbies is playing guitar. I play so called author' songs in Russian. I began playing in high school and I still enjoy it very much. You can find a number of links to author' songs pages and my songbook on my Russian page.

My another hobby is mountain climbing. I've been in New Mexico, Colorado and Washington. I am also into rock and ice climbing. Here you can find my "climbing" page with some pictures and descriptions of most interesting hikes and climbs.
