Abstract: Identification of geophysical parameters for instance is usually performed by least square. Differentiable optimization requires derivatives with respect to parameters. When the parameters are discontinuous the derivatives have Dirac singularities. We shall present the theory which justifies Calculus of Variation in such settings and show some applications for the Shallow water equation and Darcy's law.
