Symplectic and multi-symplectic partitioned Runge-Kutta methods

Abstract:

Application of symplectic partitioned Rung-Kutta (PRK) methods for symplectic ODE's is well known. Recently PRK methods are applied in space and time to Hamiltonian PDE's with multi-symplectic structure. It was shown that for some nonlinear PDE's one can obtain under discretization, explicit ODE's for the stage vectors. The two-stage Lobatto IIIA-B pair is applied as an PRK method to the "good" Boussineq equation in symplectic and multi-symplectic form. The resulting discrete equations are two level explicit schemes. Numerical results concerning energy and momentum conservation are given. Numerical dispersion properties of the methods are discussed.
