Textbook: Probability and Statistical Inference by Robert Hogg and Elliot Tanis, 6^th edition
(there are differences between this and the 5^th edition, at least as far as the material is organized and the numbering of the exercises).

Computers: We will use the computer lab in Room 108 Technology Annex or the Math computer lab, in 648 PGH.
- For 108 Technology you need an "NT account" (CougarNet), which you might already have. Otherwise, apply in Room 56 of the basement of the library or by telephoning 713-743-1411, the Information Technology help number.
- For 648 PGH accounts were created in Oct. If you did not receive yours, please see me.

Corrections

Section 7.4, problem #9: the answer in the book for (b) is not correct. Do instead problem #11.
Section 7.4, problem #12: the needed value for the F distribution is not in the table.
Use either the r₁=r₂=12 value, or, from Splus: qf(.975,13,13)= 3.115036.

Exams

Exam I: Friday, Sept. 26.
- Review during the class before the exam (Wed., 9/24). Bring any questions you might have.
- Will cover all the material up to (and including) section 7.6.
- Please bring your student ID.
- Please have a calculator that computes (at least) sample means and sample standard deviations.
- This will be an open-book exam: you may use the book, your own notes (from this or other courses), and the handouts I gave in class. Other materials are not allowed!
- Approximate results:
  - average 74/100
  - min, quartiles, max: 26, 67, 81, 88, 99 (i.e, there are about 25% of students in each of these four intervals).
Exam II: Monday, November 3.
- Review on Wed., 10/29. Bring any questions you might have.
  This is a list of review problems.
- Will cover all the material up to (and including) Section 8.9, with the exception of Sections 8.4-8.8. The emphasis is on the material discusses since the previous exam.
- Please bring your student ID.
- Please have a calculator that computes (at least) sample means and sample standard deviations. One computing linear regression would be even more useful.
- This will be an open-book exam: you may use the book, your own notes (from this or other courses), and the handouts I gave in class. Other materials are not allowed!

Final Exam: Friday, December 12, 11am-2pm
- Review problems were handed out in class. You can also take a look at the problems selected for the previous exams.
- Will cover all the material that we did this semester (see the previous exams). Chapter 9 is not on the exam.
  The exam is comprehensive.
- Please have your student I.D.
- Please have a calculator that computes (at least) sample means and sample standard deviations. One computing linear regression would be even more useful.
- This will be an open-book exam: you may use the book, your own notes (from this or other courses), and the handouts I gave in class or posted on the web. Other materials are not allowed!
- The office hours until the exam are Monday, Wednesday, 10-12 and 1-3. Appointments are also possible.
- Results:
  - If you want to see your exam, please come to my office after the break.
  - I submitted the grades on December 15. You should be able to obtain your grade in a few days by calling VIP, 713-743-8484.
  - Approximate grade distribution:
    - average 144/200
    - min, quartiles, max: 78, 130, 150, 168, 190.

- Printing from R (in 648 PGH):
  Note that the operating system in 648 PGH is Linux.
  In order to print a graph (if there is no print button), there are a few possibilities:
  - produce the graph on the screen, then do (from within R):
    > dev.print()
  - send output to a file, when done close the device, then print the file from a shell.
    Here is an example:

From within R:

	> postscript(file="histogram.ps")
	> hist(data)
	> dev.off()

From a shell: first view the file, then print it; note that the previewer
has a print button as well.

	$ gv histogram.ps &
	$ lpr histogram.ps
```
- Computer lab hours:
  - for Splus: 108 Technology can be used during the regular Mathlab hours.
  - for R: 648 PGH can be used during open hours, or whenever it is open. The schedule is also posted on the door of the lab.
