GPOTS 2012 Travel and Housing Information
TRAVEL
You are responsible for making your own travel arrangements. If traveling by plane, there are two airports located in Houston. The largest is George Bush Intercontinental Airport (Airport Code: IAH) and is 20 miles north of the UH campus. The smaller airport is William P. Hobby Airport (Airport Code: HOU) and is located 7 miles south of the UH campus. Hobby Airport is a focus city for Southwest Airlines.
Either airport is convenient, and you should check ticket prices to each to see which is the cheaper.
If you rent a car, you can do so through the rental agencies at the airport, and here are driving directions from the airports.
If you do not rent a car, you can hire a cab or you can reserve a shuttle for transportation to and from campus. We recommend the Super Shuttle and reservations can be made via their website. We have secured a GPOTS 2012 rate, and here is a flyer describing how to get that rate when making reservations. We recommend making SuperShuttle reservation well in advance of the conference. For an individual the Super Shuttle is the cheaper option, but if you have two or three people in your party, a shared cab may be cheaper than the shuttle. (If using a cab, be sure to tell the driver you are going to the UH main campus, located in southeast Houston off of I-45 -- not the UH downtown campus.) Two suggested cab companies are Yellow Cab Company (Phone: 713-236-1111) and City Cab Company (Phone: 713-649-2000). Prices for cabs are approximately $60 plus tip from George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) or $26 plus tip from Hobby Airport (HOU); also 3 or 4 people can share the cab without the price increasing.
If you are driving to GPOTS and need to park on campus, here is some information on parking.
HOUSING
You have three options for housing.
Option 1: Dorms We have reserved a block of dorm rooms at Cougar Village (4385 Wheeler St. Houston, TX 77004). This is a recently built honors dormitory at the University of Houston and the rooms are very nice. There are Single Dorm Rooms and Double Dorm Rooms available. A Single Room is $215 total ($43 / night), checking in May 29 and departing June 3. A Double Room is $300 total ($60 / night), checking in May 29 and departing June 3. Unfortunatley, you must reserve and pay for the dorm for exactly these days (May 29--June 3); it is not possible to reserve for any other days or to reserve for a subset of these days. We expect to be reimburse all dorm costs. To reserve a dorm room, follow the directions on the Registration Page. We have a limited number of dorm rooms available, and they will be given on a first come, first served basis.
Option 2: UH Hilton We have reserved a block of rooms at the UH Hilton for a conference rate of $129+tax per night. (With tax the rate is approximately $150 per night.) The UH Hilton is located on the UH campus and approximately 100 meters from where the conference will be held. To make reservations do NOT call the number on the UH Hilton website -- instead call the special UH Hilton number at 1-866-327-1161 with your credit card information. When reserving the room, mention you are with GPOTS 2012 and make sure you get the conference rate of $129 per night. There are a limited number of rooms available at the UH Hilton, and they will be given on a first come, first served basis.
Option 3: Other Hotels Off-Campus You can find off-campus housing as you wish, but you will need to find transportation to and from campus. If you want a hotel off-campus, we recommend the following:
- The RodeWay Inn and Suites -- Medical Center located at 6712 Morningside Dr, Houston, TX 77030. Phone: 713-663-6200. This hotel has reasonable prices, and rooms with kitchens are available. (We have reserved a block of 10 rooms at a rate of $62.99 per night -- mention UH Math Dept, GPOTS or David Blecher). The Rodeway Inn is approximately a 20-minute drive from the UH campus, and a very short walk to the Rice Village Shopping Center. With a slightly longer walk one can also get to the Museum District, Houston Zoo, Hermann Park, and the Texas Medical Center. It is also located within a block of the bus route on Holcombe Blvd. (Take the #68 bus to get to UH.)
Here is more information on bus routes.
- The Hilton Houston Plaza-Medical Center at 6633 Travis Street, Houston, TX 77030. Phone: 713-313-4000. This is a few blocks farther from the Rice Village Shopping Center than the Rodeway Inn, and it is closer to the Museum District, Houston Zoo, Hermann Park, and the Texas Medical Center. Again, it is approximately a 20-minute drive from the UH campus, and it is also a block away from the bus route on Holcombe Blvd. (Take the #68 bus to get to UH.)
