Help with McAfee Updates

seperator

The University of Houston has a license to use and install McAfee Enterprise Anti-Virus for Faculty, Staff and Students.  It is installed by default on any Windows PC maintained by the Math Administrators, desktop or laptop.  It can be downloaded from the UH IT website.   If off-campus, users must download and install the UHVPN software first, and then connect to UH using the UHVPN software.  The UHVPN software requires an active UH Cougarnet account with a current password.  (To reset your cougarnet password go here.)

Once you download the McAfee software, you can install it using the default settings.  After the installation completes, it should automatically update itself.

To check if McAfee Enterprise is currently updated:
1. Look for the McAfee Shield icon in the Taskbar.  Usually this is in the lower-right corner of the screen. McAfeeIcon
2. Right-click on the McAfee icon and choose "About VirusScan Enterprise". McAfeepop1
3. The About Window should appear.  Here you can see the version installed (8.5.0i), the date of the DAT file (February 6 2008) and the Installed Patch (4).  If you have version 8.0i or an earlier one, contact the .   IF the Patch version is not 4, you can download it from here.  If the date is current, you can skip the rest of these instructions.

4. If an update is needed, make sure you are connected to the internet and right-click again on the McAfee icon and choose "Update Now..." McAfeepop2
5. McAfee should start the update process.  This can take a few seconds to several minutes depending on the type of internet connection you have (dial-up or high-speed). McAfeeupdate1
6. At the end of the update, McAfee will start a 30 second countdown before the update window closes.  You can click OK or wait for the window to close on it's own.  You may see some download failures like in the example.  If so, as long as the "Update Finished" appears at the bottom, then it should be ok.  If it fails to finish, check your internet connection and try again later. If you downloaded the Patch 4 update, run it and choose the default settings.  After it is finished, you can check the McAfee About window to confirm that it is updated to the current patch.

The default time for McAfee to update is usually overnight around 2 or 3AM.  For a desktop that remains on constantly, this is fine.  For a laptop, McAfee might not get the update unless the laptop is left on and connected to the internet.

To modify the McAfee Enterprise AutoUpdate settings:
1. Right-click on the McAfee icon and choose "VirusScan Console..." McAfeepop3
2. The Console Window should appear.  To the right of AutoUpdate, you should see when the scheduled time for the update is set, the result of the last update, and the time of the last update.  Double-click on AutoUpdate to change the settings.

3. The AutoUpdate Properties window should be displayed.  You can click on the Update Now button to update immediately or click on the Schedule... button to change the setting.  Click on the Schedule... button and then click on the Schedule tab. McAfeeupprop
4. The Schedule Settings window allows for several options for when McAfee can update.  For laptops, other than "Daily", the next recommended setting is "When Idle".  Then you can choose the lenght of idle time before it starts the update.  "At Startup" or "At Logon" can significantly slow Windows down as there are many other things also happening during that time.  Once set, you can click OK for each window to close.
