Welcome to the Mathematics Department!

If you're not a "techie" or "computer friendly", or even if you are, you might not know where to begin.  Where do I get an account form?   How do you login?  How do I change my password?  What do I do once logged in?  What software is installed that I can use?   How do I ask for help?  What do I do if I need a particular application or software that is not installed on my PC?

That's what this webpage is about.  Whether your Operating System is Windows, Linux or Mac, this site is for you.

First, let's start with the basics.  In order to login to any PC in the department, you need an account.  An account sheet can be printed from http://math.uh.edu/account.pdfhere.  Once it is completed and signed by the proper authority, it should be given to the Front Office in room 651.

When a new User Account is created, an account sheet is printed.  This sheet not only gives you your username and password, but also some very useful information.  You can login to any PC in the department by using your username and password from the user account sheet.  Below are instructions for logging in depending on which Operating System you have on the PC in your office.

Operating System Procedure
Windows XP Login All Windows PCs require you to press the <Ctrl> + <Alt> + <Del> to be able to login.  Then you will see the login window on the right.  You can move between the text boxes by pressing the <Tab> key or <Shift> + <Tab> to go in reverse order, or click on each text box or button.   Enter your username in the "User name:" text box and then move to the "Password" text box and enter your password.  Do not press the <Enter> or <Return> key until at least both your username and password are entered, otherwise Windows will attempt to logon without enough user information and fail.  Also make sure the "Log on to:" list box is set to Mathematics.  If the "Log on to:" is not visible, click on the "Options >>" button and it should appear.

Once this is complete, press the <Enter> or <Return> key or click on the "OK" button and your login should start.   The first time you log into a Windows PC, it can take a short time as Windows has to create a copy of your account locally on the PC.

If your login fails, try again and make sure that the <Caps> lock key is not on (Windows usually warns you if this happens).  If you still can't login, make sure you use the correct case for your password as it is case-sensitive.   Which means that if your password is aBcd1234, then abcd1234 is not correct.  If you still can't login, notify the front office about your problem and they will contact the administrators or direct you to them in person.

After 4 failed login attempts, Windows will not allow you to try to login again for at least 1 minute.

(The "Log on using dial-up connection" option should never be enabled.)
Linux or Mac The login window should look similar to the Windows XP login, except the "Log on to:" option is not available.   The main difference using the Linux or Mac login is that you can press the <Enter> or <Return> key after you type in your username and it won't login until both your username and password are entered.  If your login fails, follow the same procedures for Windows logins above.
