Using WinSCP

(This is for managing user files through remote access.)

hr

This webpage is intended to help faculty and staff in the Mathematics Department who want to transfer files from your User Account to any computer connected to the internet.  Most of this information is also useful for Linux or Mac users, however the screenshots only apply to Windows users.

No matter where in the world you are, if you can get access to a computer with internet access, you can login to our servers here in the department and copy files to or from the computer you are at.  This can be very useful when travelling abroad and you forgot to copy that important MS Word or MS Excel document to take with you.  Or, if you want to make changes to some files and have those changes available when you return.  Of course, if you have a USB drive or a laptop, you can copy your files onto it and take it with you.  But if you forgot to copy any file you need, you would be out of luck.

If you are having problem with WinSCP and get an error saying "No such file or directory", then you may need to clear the WinSCP cache.   To do this, watch this video.

All you need is your math username and password, and the following information, to get access to your files remotely.

hr

1. SFTP Icon Look for the WinSCP icon on your desktop and open it.   If you don't have it on the desktop, look in the Start\Programs\Communications folder.  If it's still not there, it may not be installed.  Go to the Control Panel and open the Add/Remove Programs control panel.  Look through the list for WinSCP.  If it's not there, you'll need to download and install it.  You can get it from here.
2. When WinSCP launches, it will go to the login screen.  If WinSCP has already been setup, then you can skip to step 3.

If you see a listing for MathSCP, this is old and should be deleted.  Delete it by right-clicking on it and choosing Delete.

If WinSCP was not already setup for you with MathSFTP, then the screen will look like this...

WinSCPlogin

Use the following information to configure WinSCP to connect to the Math SFTP server:

Use the following settings
File Protocol SFTP
Host Name sftp.math.uh.edu
PortShould be 22
Username(your username)
PasswordYou should not enter and save your password!
Click the Save button and you should see the following window

WinSCPSave

Change the Site Name to Math SFTP and click ok.

Now you should see the WinSCP login that looks like the one below in Step 3.
3. If WinSCP was already setup for you, or you created it from the above steps, then the screen will look like this...

WinSCPLogin

Click on the Login button.
The first time you connect, a warning dialog may pop up about a new host key.  You will have to accept it, if you want to continue.
4. You will see this window appear asking for your password.

WinSCPPassword

Enter your password and click Ok.
5. The main window should look like this:

WinSCP
6. Now that you're connected, in the right window pane below the toolbars, you should see your home directory.   In the left, local file window pane, go to where you want to copy files to or from the computer you are using.  In the right, remote file window pane, go to where to copy the files from or to.   Now you can click on a file, or folder, and drag it from the left to right, or vice versa.  This will copy and not move the files you selected to where you want them.  This is similar to using Windows Explorer, the file manager, to move and copy files.
7. If you drag one or more files to copy and an error message appears, ignore it and try again.  This unknown error sometimes happens on the first copy and usually not again.  Ignore it unless it constantly happens and you can't copy files.  In which case, email the .
