Math Webmail Certificates

Trust is hard to come by.  Especially with websites.  One method of dealing with trust on the internet is by the use of Trust Certificates.

Certain companies, Trust Authorities, are entrusted, or authorized, to supply Trust Certificates and it can cost lots of money to do so.   We are working on getting a better certificates, but currently we sign our own certificates.  Which means we trust ourselves.

But today's modern browsers have been setup to be cautious of untrusted websites, so when you get a warning about an untrusted website, what do you do?  Well, we can't vouch for any website, but if you have a UH Math email account, then you should be able to trust us enough to allow your browser to accept our certificate.  So, here are some instructions on how to get thru this.

If using Firefox (which we recommend), here are the steps to accept the certificate.  (BTW, certificates expire annually, so you will have to do this each year after it expires.
1) Launch Firefox and go to webmail.math.uh.edu.  If this is the first time visiting this site, you should get a page that looks like the one below.
2) Click on the text "I Understand the Risks" and you should see the "Add Exception" button.
3) Click on the "Add Exception" button and the "Add Security Exception" window should appear.  For a second or two, Firefox won't have the certificate details, so it might look like this:
4) Then it should change and look like the image below.  If it doesn't change, then click on the "Get Certificate" button.
5) Now, click on the "Confirm Security Exception" button and it should close and you should then see the login page for Math Webmail.
1) If using Internet Explorer, then here are the instructions to accept and store the certificate permanently.  But you should be able to get past the warning easily.  Here's what you'll see in IE.
2) You should be able to click on the text "Continue to this website (not recommended)." and it should take you to the login page for Math Webmail.  Notice that the address bar is now red and has "Certificate Error" on the right side of the address.
3) You can tell IE to accept and store the certificate so that each time you visit the Math Webmail, you won't have to make the one extra step.  Click on the "Certificate Error" button and the "Untrusted Certificate" window should appear.
4) Click on the text "View Certificates" and up pops the Certificate window.
5) Click on the "Install Certificate" button and the "Certificate Import Wizard" window will appear.
6) Click the Next button and the "Certificate Store" window will ask the following.  Choose "Place all certificates in the follwoing store" and then click on the Browse button.
7) The "Select Certificate Store" window pops up asking where to store the certificate.  Scroll down the list and choose "Third-Party Root Certification Authorities" and then click the Ok button.
8) The "Certificate Store" window should now look like this.
9) The "Certificate Import Wizard" window will now show the following.  Click on the Finish button.
10) You should get a popup telling you the import was successful.
Now when you go to webmail.math.uh.edu, IE should take you directly to the login page and not to the page warning with "There is a problem with this website's security certificate.

That's all for now.
