Continuing Classes During Coronavirus Furlough (II)

We are going to continue instruction online starting Monday using blackboard. The university has announced that course lectures will be exclusively online for the remainder of the semester.

Here are blackboard instructions for you given to me by one of my colleagues.
(1) Logon to Blackboard Learn.
(2) From the list of displayed courses, select 2020SP-12493-MATH3331... for those in differential equations and 2020SP-30507-MATH6378... for those in scientific computing.
(3) Under course management, select Course Tools.
(4) Under course tools, select Blackboard Collaborate.
(5) Then connect to the specific session for your course.

Math 3331 will meet on blackboard Monday and Wednesday from 1:00 to 2:30.

Math 6378 will meet on blackboard Monday and Wednesday from 4:00 to 5:30.

You can sign in early but no more than 15 minutes early. I'll start the lecture at the given start time.

The session name will be lecture.

The screen shots below are from the standard windows-7 display manager. Your appearance may differ depending on your particular platform.

Math 3331 session appearance. Math 6378 session appearance.

Your session controls will often appear as displayed to the right.

The camera frame is usually on the top.

The participants frame is usually in the middle.

The chat frame is usually on the bottom.

You can toggle your own audio and video on and off by pressing the Talk and Video buttons. There's a limit to three active cameras at any given time so it's best to keep your video off unless needed. Also, keep your audio off unless you have a question or remark. We'll all be able to hear you.

Some of you may not have a microphone. You can get my attention by pressing the "hand" button in the participants frame. A bell will ring on my laptop. Type your question or remark in the chat field (hit enter when done) and when you're done lower your hand by pressing the hand button again.

When you leave the lecture please either
"Exit" from the "File" pull down menu (if you have it) or
"Leave Session" from the "Help" pull down menu.

To my graduate students. Not much will change. Projects will be assigned, submitted and your graded projects will be retrieved electronically as usual.

To my undergraduate students. Your assignments and my solutions will be posted on my web page as usual. I might want to change your office hours however. Prior to now, office hours were M&W 2:30-4:00. Let me know on Monday if you want me to change these. I'll use blackboard for office hours too.

I still plan to give you your second midterm exam as well as your 3 hour final exam -- both will almost certainly be online. The university is currently working on an exam policy.

I've spoken to my assistant, Frank O'Brien fjobrien@uh.edu, and he has agreed to answer your questions via email. This approach can be modified moving forward as the need arises.

You all stay safe. Will see you on monday.
