In this talk I'll go over some recent results done with G Q Chen and D Wang on applying the Murat-Tartar method of compensated compactness to transonic irrotational steady 2-D gas dynamics and isometric embedding of a two dimension Riemannian manifold into three dimensional Euclidean space. Surprisingly (?), the two problems are governed by analagous PDEs and are in some sense dual to each other.
