Optimal decay rates of correlations for nonuniformly hyperbolic systems

Abstract
We investigate the decay rate of correlations for general nonuniformly
hyperbolic systems with singularities, on piecewise Hölder
observables. By constructing a completely new scheme of coupling according
to certain stopping times we obtain optimal bounds for the decay rate of
correlations for a large class of observables. Our results are applied to
general classes of billiards. This is a joint work with Chernov and
Vaienti.
