- One can get help from Matlab/Octave in one of the following ways
(do help help to begin):
-
help <item> displays information about the
requested item (which can be a topic or a function);
help describes the available topics.
- doc <item> displays information about the
requested item (
it has more information than help):
-
for Matlab this is in a separate
browser-like Help window
- for Octave the information is
displayed as text, using Info:
-
to exit use
q
-
to advance a page press
space
-
to move back a page press
DELETE
-
for more options and to get help on Info
press
C-h
(keep
Control
pressed and then
press h
).
Info is like a tree (see the list on the top of the
window), on its branches one can move:
-
up (u)
-
down (ENTER on the entry under the pointer)
-
sideways (n for next, p for
previous)
- return to the last visited page (l, for
last)
-
etc.
-
lookfor <keyword> searches all M-files for
the keyword
- helpwin will open a separate
window giving easy access to the covered topics
-
helpdesk, provides information in HTML form (and also a
link to manuals in PDF).
-
docsearch, searches HTML
documentation in the Help browser.
Octave's documentation is also available
in HTML or PDF:
-
on a PC, go the Programs list, the Octave entry includes
Documentation, in either PDF or HTML;
access to Notepad++ and gnuplot is also available there.
- if the above does not work:
-
on the Octave icon (shortcut) on your desktop use the right mouse
to open "Properties"
-
see the address under Target (in my installation it
is C:/Octave/3.2.4_gcc-4.4.0/....)
-
in your browser do Open File (C-o for Firefox) and
navigate to that folder, then:
- go to doc/octave/html/interpreter/index.html for the HTML
documentation;
- go to doc/octave/pdf for the PDF documentation
-
there is more documentation in doc/ (in my installation
for gnuplot)
-
you can bookmark these locations in the browser
-
Octave documentation online:

Unless marked otherwise
below, this is also fine for
Octave.
