Professor David Blecher

Welcome to Intermediate Analysis

Text: Analysis with an Introduction to Proof, Third OR 4th Edition OR 5th Edition, by Steven R. Lay, Prentice-Hall, 2001. Buy it as cheap as you can (homework numbers will include 3rd, 4th, and 5th Edition numbers), since it will mostly just be used for homework problems, and for extra reading: for classnotes you will mostly use the typed notes I will provide instead of the book.

Please read Chapter 2 from the text yourself, Sections 5, 6, 7 (you can omit Sections 8 and 9). Depending on your background, you might have to read Chapter 1 too to supplement the classnotes on logic and deductive reasoning below (corresponding to Chapter 1 in the textbook).
Notes on logic and deductive reasoning. Read these several times and digest thoroughly. Later notes may be found on Blackboard.

Upcoming due dates: KEEP WATCHING THIS SPOT SINCE THINGS WILL BE ADDED. Pace yourself, dont do things at the last moment. Homework will almost always be due every second day, and there will usually be a quiz in class every second day or so. There will be a test after each chapter, and two tests on the Chapter 3 material (see tests page). Homework 9 will be due Wednesday Nov 8. The first part of Homework 10 (the questions on the first section in the integration chapter, plus the additional question (1) not from the text) will be due Wednesday nov 15. The remainder of Homework 10 is due November 20. All tests will be in class, and will be for just part of the class, after which we will resume teaching. Test 1 will be on September 18, in class. Test 2 will be on October 4. Test 3 has been moved to October 18 (this was requested and I received no objections). Test 4 will be on Nov 3. Test 5 will be just before Thanksgiving (Nov 20). Test 6 and the final exam will be in class in the last week of classes (November 29 and December 1, respectively). Bring your ID to these please!
